Bridging the Gap: Aligning with the Life of Your Dreams

What I Wish to Be and What I Am: Closing the Gap Between Our Dreams and Reality

In each of us, there exists a gap between where we are and where we’d like to be. We may envision a life of inner peace, confidence, and fulfillment, but daily actions often seem at odds with these ideals. This space between our wishes and our reality can be a source of frustration, and even sadness, because deep down, we know we’re capable of more. But why do we stay stuck? And how do we begin to shift?

Here’s the beautiful part: understanding this gap, becoming aware of it, is the first step toward closing it.

The Distance Between Desire and Reality

Let’s explore this gap with some examples that many of us experience:

  1. What We Wish to Be vs. What We Are
Imagine: You wish to be a confident, grounded person who makes decisions without second-guessing. However, in reality, you find yourself doubting every choice and seeking others’ approval constantly.
The Frustration: This gap between confidence and self-doubt can lead to feelings of anxiety and inadequacy. You might even start questioning your worth, creating a cycle that reinforces the very self-doubt you wish to overcome.

  2. What We Wish to Have vs. What We Actually Have
Imagine: You dream of having a life filled with meaningful relationships, a sense of belonging, and time for personal growth. Yet, your reality is cluttered with casual interactions, superficial conversations, and a packed schedule that leaves no room for genuine connection.
The Frustration: This lack of alignment can feel isolating. You’re left yearning for a depth you can’t find and questioning why these meaningful connections seem so elusive.

  3. What We Dream of Doing vs. What We Actually Do
Imagine: You dream of pursuing a creative career, traveling, or investing in your health. But instead, you’re bogged down with daily routines, deadlines, and a work-life balance that feels anything but balanced.
The Frustration: Every day that passes feels like another missed opportunity, fueling a sense of dissatisfaction and frustration. You know what you want to do, but the actions you take don’t reflect this desire, creating a sense of being “stuck.”

Why This Misalignment Causes Frustration

When our thoughts, words, and actions are not aligned with our dreams, the result is often a feeling of emptiness. This frustration stems from a deeper truth: we know what we want and need to feel fulfilled, yet we allow old patterns, beliefs, and external expectations to dictate our choices.

Much of this disconnect happens because we’re living on autopilot. We fall into conditioned routines and habits that keep us where we are rather than moving us toward where we want to be. The result? A sense of disconnect, not only from our dreams but also from ourselves.

Practices to Bridge the Gap

The journey to align with our dreams isn’t about radical changes overnight but about consistent, intentional practices that bring us back to ourselves. Here are some ways to start:

  1. Daily Self-Reflection
Take five minutes each morning or evening to reflect on one question: Are my actions today aligned with who I want to be? This small check-in can increase awareness of where you may be out of sync, helping you make adjustments before misalignment becomes frustration.

  2. Body Awareness Practice
Our body often holds answers that our mind overlooks. Practice mindful movement, like yoga or simple stretching, to reconnect with what you feel rather than what you think. During these moments, notice where tension arises and ask yourself if there’s something in your life that this tension may be symbolizing.

  3. Aligning Words with Intentions
Language shapes our reality. Begin to notice the words you use daily, both out loud and in your mind. Are they supporting or limiting your vision? For example, instead of “I’m too busy to take time for myself,” try “I’m prioritizing my well-being because it helps me thrive.” This shift in language gradually helps align actions with intentions.

  4. Regular Visualization
Visualization can be a powerful tool to close the gap between our dreams and our actions. Spend a few moments each day visualizing the life you want, not only in terms of achievements but also how you want to feel. Picture yourself confidently making decisions, deeply connecting with others, or joyfully pursuing your passions. Let this practice remind you of why you’re making these changes.

  5. Setting Gentle, Realistic Goals
We don’t have to overhaul our lives in one go. Instead, choose one area of life to focus on each week—whether it’s connecting with someone meaningful, carving out a small space for creativity, or making one decision independently. These small changes add up, creating momentum that brings you closer to the life you envision.

The Path to Coming Home

Aligning our actions with our dreams is a process of continuously returning to ourselves, of “coming home.” Yoga, as a lifestyle, has become this path for me—a return to connection, to being seen and heard, and to truly belonging. This journey is available to all of us, through simple, intentional practices that bring us back into harmony with who we wish to be.

In my classes, retreats, and programs, I am here to guide you in these practices, helping you bridge that gap and feel closer than ever to the life you envision. 🌿💫
